My True Nature

My True Nature was created in 2011 to celebrate the World Wildlife Fund's 50th anniversary. It is both a celebration of nature and a catalyst to encourage teachers, youth leaders and young people to engage creatively with the natural world.

My True Nature - a competition to celebrate 50 years of WWF

Recently, WWF (the World Wildlife Fund) briefed me to develop an idea to celebrate their 50th anniversary. They wanted something that would be inspiring, hopeful, personal...and slightly different!

My concern is that at the heart of the environmental crisis, we're losing touch with nature. Our digital, online, consumerist lifestyles allow little space to explore, celebrate and just be in nature. This is especially true for young people who "are spending less time than ever exploring the natural world" (see references at the bottom of the page).

Yet ironically, I believe we find out true identity when we're connected to nature in some way, rooted in a particular landscape, engaged in an outdoor activity or sport, or just experiencing the seasons, the elements or playing with a much loved pet.

So my idea was a simple and personal one...let's get children and young people to express what they love about the natural world and when they feel most at home with nature. They can bring their ideas to life across five categories: Camera (film & photography); Audio (sound & music); Movement (dance & movement); Art (drawing, painting & sculpture); and Words (poetry & prose). And their 'works' will be exhibited online and in a special WWF birthday exhibition to inspire others.

Limelight presents...

On 24 August 2010, ahead of their appearance at the London Proms, the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra performed to a packed 100 Club as part of Limelight's monthly sessions - classical music in a rock n roll setting.

A green flag for a green school

This north London school was awarded the Green Flag in 2009. This is an eco-label for excellent environmental education and the top award for schools.

I worked with the children of the "Star Squad" (an environmental action-party made up of children from every year group in the school) to produce this film and capture some of the reasons why the school won the award. Produced, directed and edited by Richard Wilson. Camera, Ed Beck.

Ethiopia: a biblical land

In September 2005, on the eve of the festival of Meskel, I visited Ethiopia and travelled throughout the northern historical route. This short film captures my first impression of Addis Ababa, an early morning view of lake Tana and the market and churches of Lalibella. Filmed, edited and produced by Richard Wilson.

Timbuktu and beyond

In January 2008 I arrived in Bamako, capital of Mali, for a journey that would take me along the river Niger to Timbuktu and beyond...into the desert to experience African music amongst the white dunes and the robed Tuaregs.
